YWCA Greenwich reflects on 100 years of service

Greenwich Time 22.December.2019:The 19th annual Greenwich Town Swim Championships at Greenwich High School went swimmingly, as nearly 200 swimmers from the Boys and Girls Club Barracudas, YWCA Dolphins and the Sharks Swim Team tested their skills in 60 events.
Sponsored by the YWCA of Greenwich and the Dolphins Swim Team, the Holiday event has become a holiday tradition, as many of the competitors, ages 6-17, get a chance to compete together as individuals and teams.
“This is a great opportunity for the kids to compete in a wonderful facility with their parents, friends, families and teammates cheering them on,” said Dolphins head coach Nick Cavataro, who has served as the meet director for all 19 meets.
The meet’s big winner was 16-year-old Meghan Lynch of the Dolphins. Lynch, a Greenwich High School junior, who has starred for the Cardinals girls swim team for three seasons, won five races.
Lynch claimed the gold medal in the 15-and over 100-yard freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly events. She also won the open 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle races. Lynch’s time in the 500 freestyle of 5:00.22 lowered her own meet record by .5 seconds and was the fourth consecutive time she won the event. She also set a meet mark in the 100 butterfly (58.69), breaking the 10-year old mark held by Morgan Karetnick (59.25).
Other meet records set in the event included 12-year old Olivia Cieciwa, who lowered the 50 backstroke mark of 30.28 set in 2005 by Lauren Church to 29.61. Ceiciwa also won the 50 freestyle and butterfly events.
On the boy’s side Aiden Bucaria, 14, grabbed first-place medals in the 200 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and breaststroke and broke three meet records in the process. The Greenwich high freshman who will debut for the Cardinals’ varsity team next month, clocked in at 2:17.06 in the 200 breaststroke, breaking Alexander Hazlett’s 2018 meet record time of 2:19.93.
Bucaria also swam a 49.88 in the 13-14 year-old 100 freestyle, breaking Michael Dustin’s 2007 mark of 51.22. The 1:03.53 time in the 100 breaststroke broke Alex Jahan’s 2011 mark of 1:04.22.
“To see six meet records fall in the meet is pretty remarkable when you look at the group of swimmers that have raced in this meet over the years. The records are very formidable,” Cavataro said. “Lynch is the reigning state high school female MVP and capable of a record swim almost any time out. Karetnick was a Greenwich All- American and competed at Princeton and Church was a GHS All-American and competed at the University of Pennsylvania. Jahan was GHS All American and Olympic Trial Qualifier who competed at Ohio State.”
Other big winners included the sister and brother combination of Kate Boutry, 9, and Andrew Boutry, 16, each of whom took home four golds medals. Kate Boutry, earned the top spot in the 10-and-under 50-yard butterfly, backstroke and butterfly and was first in the 100 butterfly.
Andrew Boutry claimed titles in the 500 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Nicole Boutry added first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
Triple winners included: McKayla McLoughlin, 8-years old; Gray Hinkle, 10; and Penny Lazar, 13. Double winners included: Jackson Waters, 8; Julian Reiff, 8; Payton Foster, 13; Luke Mendelsohn, 12; William Schuhmacher, 12 and Reed Keller, 10.
