Fiona Busch, a senior at Greenwich High School, is the co-founder of the Sisters for Sisters Education Network, the first letter-writing network between Afghan refugees in NYC and girls living in the Women for Afghan Women (WAW) Children’s Center in Kabul, Afghanistan. She started this organization with her twin sister, Isabelle, at age 9, in cooperation with WAW, the largest non-governmental Afghan women’s rights organization in the world. After hearing on the radio that the water fountains at a girl’s school in Afghanistan were poisoned, Fiona and her sister were horrified that girls their age were being harmed and deterred from going to school. Looking for a way to support and empower these girls in pursuing their education, Fiona and Isabelle created a letter-writing network and have been personally corresponding with Afghan girls living in the WAW Children’s Center in Kabul for eight years. In 2017, they expanded their initiative by creating and leading sessions for Afghan refugee and immigrant children participating in the WAW Girls and Boys Leadership Programs in the New York Headquarters. In 2019, they established the first Skype call program with the Children’s Center in Kabul to encourage English practice and cultural exchange.

Fiona is also very involved in her school and community. She is co-president of the National History Club and the German Club, and is a peer mentor at GHS. She has completed over 200 hours of community service through the Greenwich Historical Society and Neighbor to Neighbor. Throughout high school, she has danced in a pre-professional ballet program and enjoys playing the violin in a youth philharmonic.

Isabelle is also very involved in athletics and music. She has been rowing on the Greenwich Crew varsity team since her sophomore year during which she earned 4th place in the Northeast Regional Championships in a quad and won the Connecticut Indoor Rowing Championship for her weight class. She also plays the violin in a youth philharmonic, plays the acoustic guitar in her spare time, and sings in her school’s all-girls honors choir.

In addition, she is active in her school and greater community. She is the co-vice president of the Finance Club at her school and has done over 200 hours of community service through Neighbor to Neighbor, Greenwich Hospital, and Greenwich High School’s peer mentoring program.
